Everyone hates movement joints! They are a pain to detail, inconvenient to install, and the aesthetics are often less than ideal. BUT they are necessary... both for a properly functioning structure and to keep the lawyers away.
Learning objectives:
1.) Understand the fundamental mechanisms in masonry that create a need for movement joints.
2.) Learn the industry standard practices for expansion joint design in clay brick masonry.
3.) Review the published standard for control joint design in concrete block masonry.
4.) Consider an alternative approach to shrinkage control design in concrete masonry.
Come join the fun, and see if you can hate movement joints just a little bit less!
